This part will introduce students to learning good habits such as proper posture, proper holding of the pick, and proper tuning of the guitar.

Proper posture – this will include sitting up straight, using an armless chair, and resting the guitar on the player’s thigh. Using a footstool will give the player the benefit of elevating the guitar and improving the technique as the lessons progress. The most important thing to remember is to relax – tension will hamper your playing the guitar.

This lesson will allow  beginners to know the guitar parts and their descriptions: the body, neck, and headstock.

The body – contains the bridge which is the physical connection between the body and the strings. This point transfers the vibration of the strings to the body and from the body to the strings. Electrical guitars will have the pick-ups, selector switch, pots, and jack socket in the body.

The Neck – contains the playing surface or fretboard of the guitar. It has the frets which are thin bars usually made of metal where the strings are pressed. The markers are the bots inlaid in the fretboard that allows the player to get acquainted with the playing surface – they are usually placed on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 12th frets.

The Headstock – is the final termination for the guitar strings. It contains the tuning pegs and nut. The tuning pegs are used to tighten and loosen the string tension to allow string pitch adjustments. The nut serves as the space divider between strings and it distinguishes the headstock from the neck of the guitar.

The string order, are placed vertically left to right – from the thickest to the thinnest string with note assignment of E A D G B E. The fret number allows the player to know where the chord will be played down the guitar’s neck. If there’s no number on the fret, the chord will then played with an indicator of a thick bar indicating the nut.

Open strings are often distinguished by hollow circle - meaning the string is plucked but not fretted. Dampened strings are characterized by an x mark and it indicates the strings not to be played for a certain chord. Barred chords are represented by an arc – this denotes that same finger is used for depressing the strings in the bar. Power chords are just like barred chords but are most often used applied in rock. The suggested fingering: Index = 1, Middle = 2, Ring = 3, Pinky = 4, and Thumb = T.
