Guitar songs for beginners should be nothing more than the bare bones of what the music sound really sound like. The tunes you practice will likely only involve a few chords very much like the ones used by Rock groups like Status Quo Etc, but nevertheless you'll be playing the tunes.

The key point here is the repetition of the same basic chords and notes to reinforce in the players mind exactly how to play them. Practice is the key  here, but it's far better to learn some really good and enjoyable guitar songs for beginners than to sit through hours of mind numbing chord practice.
